Johannesburg : AFP. Cricket South Africa (CSA) Cricket Director and former captain Graeme Smith on Thursday supported the Board of Control for Cricket in India, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, to be the chairman of the International Cricket Council. On Friday, a day after Graeme Smith's statement, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has clarified that Smith's statement was not the official statement of the board, but his personal statement.
The CSA took a different stand from its Cricket Director Graeme Smith's statement supporting BCCI President Sourav Ganguly for the post of ICC President, stating that protocol would be followed before supporting any candidate. Smith, the CSA cricket director and former captain, endorsed Ganguly on Thursday for the top post of the ICC, but the day after that the CSA took a different stand from Smith's statement.
CSA President Chris Nanjani said that we should respect the ICC and our own protocol before deciding which candidate to support. He said that no candidate has been nominated yet and that the CSA board will take a decision according to its protocol after the candidature is finalized. That way Graeme Smith's statement no longer matters.
At the same time, when BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal was asked about CSA cricket director Sourav Ganguly's support for the post of ICC, he said that if an Indian is in this position then it will be good for global cricket. Many veterans of India have taken over as the ICC President. In such a situation, if Ganguly gets this position then the appearance of cricket will change to a great extent, because he has a vision.
