New Delhi : Former Indian cricket team opener Gautam Gambhir had a lot of talent but due to not being able to control his anger, he got his loss done. Former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar believes that Gambhir's anger became a major hurdle in his career.
When Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman retired one after the other, there was an empty spot in the Indian Test team but the fans were not so afraid of it because they knew Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag would handle the next generation. Unfortunately, India lost both the openers soon after the departure of Dravid, Laxman and Sachin. He was replaced by Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan.
Former chief selector Dilip Vengsarkar, who has seen Sehwag's best phase and Gambhir's rise, told the Times of India that Gambhir could play more than he played. The reason behind his career not being long was anger.
In 2003, Gambhir made his debut against Bangladesh and in 2016 he played his last Test match. After this, in the year 2018, he announced his retirement.
Gambhir played just 54 Test matches for India, scoring 4154 runs which included 9 centuries. He averaged 41.95 in Tests. In 2009, Gambhir was voted the best Test player of the ICC. This year he scored 1269 runs in 8 Tests at an average of 84.60. He played five consecutive centuries and four half-century innings.
In 2007, when India became the T20 world champions for the first time, Gambhir scored 75 off 54 balls against Pakistan in the final. In 2011, when India won the World Cup title for 28 years, they scored 97 against Sri Lanka in the final.
